Zenith Pilot Big Date or Rolex Submariner 116610LV

    Hi all,

So I went to my AD to pick up my new Omega Speedmaster that I ordered at the end of last year (I will post pictures of it later).

I have really got the watch collecting bug at the moment, bad! Anyhow I was looking at what the next potential purchase would be and the two watches I am looking at are really different. One is an onbvious choice (Rolex Submariner 116610LV) and the other one slightly more unusual Zenith Pilt Big date.

I love them both for different reasons.

The Zenith would be more of a purchase of the heart, i love the look and the heritage of the El Primera movement. I realise this will not hold its value if wanted to sell in on later.

The Rolex Submariner, I love the green bezel and dial and I have always wanted to own a Rolex and would tick the box for my collection. Downsides, I don't want the usual 'Is that a real Rolex' everytime I wear it.

My local dealer is great, especially on pricing (no VAT helps).

He will do the Zenith for £3300 and The Rolex for £4500-£4600.

I know I need to make my own mind up and they are diffrent types of watches but just interested for your feedback. I can only chose one, unfortunatly!

Hopefully I have got the images right this time?

As you already have a chrono. the sub would be a good choice.

For those prices.. the LV every time - you should not lose anything on it..

Never been asked that once. Get the LV. If you want a Zenith just keep a look out on SC. They tend to sit there for weeks.

Nor have I .. tbh only once has anyone commented on my wrist wear !

I understand where you are comming from with the comments on Rolex.

I have 4 Rolex watches. They are the only watches I wear that ever attract any kind of comment. Even so the comments are infrequent. I get the impression though, that the comment regarding a Rolex follows after I have left the scene.
IMO the Zenith is a much better watch. The Rolex is a much safer buy.

The Zenith appeals to my heart and the Rolex to my wallet. It depends on how much wear you are going to have with the watch, as the bracelet is much better for abuse!

Buy the green submariner - or a better/nicer Zenith
It's just a matter of time...

I quite like the Pilot but which Zenith would you go for?

Zenith Pilot Big Date or Rolex Submariner 116610LV

Personally, I really like the Zenith. However, the way Rolex keep putting up their prices, I'd go for the Sub while its still at that price, sure they'll have had a couple of 10% rises by this time next year.

    There are only a handful;

Original el primero rainbow flyback - in either colour, or both :)

    Striking 10th or stratos.

I agree that they are more representative of the modern day Zenith.

Not when you factor in refurb - v - replacement.....

Are these RRP in the Channel Islands?

Has anyone from the forum bought from there? seems like a great saving.

The RRP of the Zenith was £3900 ish

The RRP on the Submarner is around about £5000

Remember its vate free over here.

Anything else is overpriced, look up the price of houses!!

The Zenith at 3300 is a steal. I reckon if you flip it in the future, the loss is limited. However as the other said, the rolex may even appreciate in value. So if resale is an important factor for you, then there's really no contest. But if this is intended to be kept for a long time, go with your heart. As it was my case, thats why I bought the big date pilot, while I already had another el primero in the collection. Have never owned or the intention to buy a rolex in the foreseeable future. They just dont flow my boat.

I would go for the Rolex myself. Its a better long term bet for resale values. Zenith are great watches but not the best resale values IMHO. :-(

yeah, it's a bit like do I marry my high school sweetheart or the fashionable prostitute because she's easy and I don't have to feel very much involved?

remember, if a watch is not for life, it's not a watch: it's a glance.

Zenith Pilot Big Date or Rolex Submariner 116610LV

Definitely the LV, especially at that price :).

The Zenith Big Date Pilot is a lot of watch for that price. I bought mine in June last year in the UK, I paid c.£500 more at a UK AD. I wear it a lot more than I do my Sub. I would go for the Zenith.

After a lot of thought I have gone with the more unusual of the 2 and gone with the Zenith Pilot Big date!!! I just love everything about it, from the movement, the clear casback, strap, the dial....

The Submariner is still in my scopes but will have to wait, I saw it as more of the safe bet but as collecting watches is a hobby not an investment for me it can wait.

Im working in Cheshire next week so will collect it the week after when i'm back and will post pictures then, can't wait!

I was very tempted by one of the Big Date Specials but not at £4,700. But £3,300 is a different matter!

    Excellent choice and cracking price.

The Zenith is a beauty and a significant step up from the Rolex in looks and exclusivity, I would go for the Zenith every day of the week especially at that bargain price.
