Shipping to Switzerland for service and avoiding customs charges

I need to send a watch directly to the manufacturer in Switzerland as they have no presence in the UK, and I am looking for advice on how to do this please.
It is an expensive watch, and I could therefore end up paying a very large customs / VAT bill when I send the watch, and when I return it (which would not be right given that it is already my watch), so I think I need to do a temporary export for repair.

I have spoken to the manufacturer, and they are giving me inconsistent advice, and then was on the phone to FedEx for nearly an hour yesterday and got nowhere.

Does anyone know who I should be speaking to / what forms I should fill in / a good company that will take care of the shipping, and give me confidence that I won’t get these charges

    Thanks in advance...

I think someone mentioned in another thread that you are not liable for VAT as you have not bought or sold the watch.

    Merely transporting it for refurbishment.

Unless it's a warranty repair VAT will be payable on the repair & shipping charge.

To OP, I was in a similar situation in 2010. I needed to send an old Minerva watch to Montblanc for repair. I didn't fill in any specific HMRC paperwork when sending the watch to Switzerland. However, on MB's advice I used DHL and wrote on the consignment note "Returned to manufacturer for repair only." On MB's shipping note they stamped in large red letters "Returned Repair". When the watch came back I was only charged VAT on the repair price.

I appreciate this was 10 years ago and the regs have probably changed several times since then. I suggest you try calling HMRC for their advice. If all else fails you could try my approach but be prepared for a drawn out process to get a refund if you are charged on the watch's value. Needless to say, have all your purchase receipts, correspondence with the manufacturer, etc available. Good Luck.

Yes VAT on the repair which you would pay in the UK anyhow.

I got the impression the OP was talking about the value of the watch itself.

    Maybe I misunderstood

Thanks guys - I have spoken to DHL, and they have provided a bit of guidance including the bit on the VAT on the repair / service.

The thing I am worried about is the inadvertent and incorrect charging of VAT and duties on the full value of the watch if I don’t get the process right. I know that I should not have to pay this, but we also know that the process of importing and exporting, especially in the current situation post Brexit and during COVID, is complex and prone to errors on the part of customs.

Given the value of the watch, and the potential error of a 20-30% charge for VAT and duties coming back into the UK, and who knows going into Switzerland, then I want to be sure I get it right, and to be honest I would prefer that a shipping company takes care of this for me, to ensure that the full paperwork is done.

This if what DHL provided to me (may be useful to others reading this in the future), and looks like I just need to ensure that there is an invoice and descriptions going out to refer to when being shipped back. However the manufacturer has said they can’t ship back with DHL as the value of the watch is too high for them to reimport.

    Export:
    · Exporter/Importer
    · Value
    · Clear description of goods
    · Statement ‘No license is required’ on the invoice
    · Confirmation it is temporary export

    Import:
    · Exporter/Importer
    · Proof of export (DHL AWB)
    · Written confirmation of warranty or non-warranty
    · Warranty- warranty documents
    · Non- warranty – proof of repair costs
    · CPC (customs procedure code) 6100000 quoted on pre alert instructions (to clear as return after repair)
